Glass Table Top

Egyptians are known to have started the glass industry around fifteen hundred bc. It is made from common sand or silica. Some say it was discovered when lightening strikes the sand, thus melting the sand into glass.  Around the late eighteen hundreds a Frenchman named Francois Royer de la Bastie invented the tempered glass, being done by reheating glass and cooling it in a special way. If broken, the glass would just shatter in small pieces instead of breaking into sharp cutting edges. This was great for making a glass table top.

One of the prettiest glass table top is the one that looks like broken glass; it takes on the appearance of thousands of pieces of the glass. It is laminated together in three pieces. Most of the tops are from about three fourths inches thick to one inch thick, with a flat polished edge. At a distance and the right light, it will also look like granite. They come in either round or rectangle shapes. Some will have glass legs; others may have metal or wood legs.

There are coffee tables that have a glass table top. Many are round, some are square. They can come with a stained glass or even beveled. Adding elegance to the living room they have graceful lines and the base if made of iron, can be beautiful. Some coffee tables come in sets with the glass table top on the end tables as well as the coffee table itself. Having a matched set is ideal when wanting everything in the living room to match or at least complement each other.

An unusual coffee table that has a glass table top is a wagon wheel, made of teak. It is so unique that one or two in the living room would certainly add a lot of charm. They are made from an aged wagon wheel and are handcrafted so no two are alike. The glass must be measured to fit the wheel. It has one drawer that can store a few items. Because these are hand made, there will be irregularities but that just adds to the charm.

There is a glass table top that lies over a mosaic design. Each piece of cut glass is laid by hand, thus no two alike will be made. Then the glass is laid over the top, usually it slips into a lip type edge, to hold the glass in place. This type of style will add pop and color to any room.

Lawn furniture has come a long way from mom and dads. Now it is made with such different kinds of wood and metals, it can be hard to choose one. It is very different and quite a conversation piece.
